We'll Have A Gay Old Time!

Recently, Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon was quoted in New York Times as saying that she is gay and that it was her "choice" to be gay. This statement by her set off an earthquake of apocalyptic proportions within the gay and lesbian communities and within their loyal fanatical comrades in the blog world because they have been trying to convince everyone who will listen that their gayness is NOT a matter of choice! Being a homosexual is who they naturally are - NOT what they have chosen to be! We have certainly been subject to that annoying drum beat for many years without wavering or interruption! Then along comes Cynthia Nixon!

Cynthia Nixon must have missed the talking points memo of the gay rights movement because she definitely wasn't regurgitating the gay rights movement's politically correct "we are born gay" mantra. These cultural definers cannot be tolerant of an independent idea or thought at odds with their publicly-stated  position or goals! Doesn't Cynthia know that if "choice" is let into the "gay rights" conversation and public debate that the "intolerant, Bible believing, right wing, Nazi racist fanatics" will beat their chests and say we told you so! The word "choice" brings with it the horrifying idea that someone can actually change their sexual identity. This is blasphemy in the gay rights movement!

Watching The Talk video above was highly entertaining, comical, and very illustrative of thinking that no longer recognizes absolute moral standards or agreed upon word definitions. Almost everyone nowadays can redefine people or ideas as they see fit so they can be personally comfortable with the person, idea, or behavior. Remember President Bill Clinton's famous line -"That depends upon what the meaning of the word 'is' is"?

All the women in the video were trying to set up their own personal definitions as to what it means for someone to be legitimately recognized as gay. One woman said it's OK for someone to choose to be gay and OK for another person to declare that they were born gay. May I ask WHO is she to decide for the rest of us who is and who isn't gay and the criteria that someone needs to meet in order to qualify as being legitimately gay? Also, WHO decided it was OK to be gay in the first place against the objections and concerns of others? One of the women said "the country is kinda confused anyway - aren't they?" Yes, we are! So please enlighten us! Is being "gay" a choice, genetic make up, both, a combination of both, or a little of this and a little of that? How can the rest of us decide what being gay is if you can not even decide among yourselves what it is?

Below are some of the critical comments made about Cynthia Nixon and her supposedly controversial and insensitive comments:
  •  Among the activists most horrified by Nixon's comments was Truth Wins Out founder Wayne Besen, whose organization monitors and tries to debunk programs that claim to cure people of same-sex attractions with therapy. Besen said he found the actress' analysis irresponsible and flippant, despite her ample caveats:
"Cynthia did not put adequate thought into the ramifications of her words, and it is going to be used when some kid comes out and their parents force them into some ex-gay camp while she's off drinking cocktails at fancy parties," Besen said. "When people say it's a choice, they are green-lighting an enormous amount of abuse because if it's a choice, people will try to influence and guide young people to what they perceive as the right choice."

  • Nixon may have unwittingly given aid and comfort to those who want to deny same-sex couples the right to marry, adopt children, and secure equal spousal benefits, said Jennifer Pizer, legal director of the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and the Law, a pro-gay think-tank based at the University of California, Los Angeles.
  • Wonderful - nothing like giving the anti-gay bigots more ammunition. Ms. Nixon is the ONLY person I've ever run across that says her gayness is a "choice." The only way that's possibly true is if she's actually bisexual in orientation and she decided she wanted to exclusively follow her attraction to women. I seriously doubt she woke up one day and thought, "Gee, I think I'll be gay." The orientation had to be there to begin with.
  • Ms. Nixon has the right to her own life and belief system. Although she has the right to share her "truth" with others, I agree that the way in which she has chosen to "enlighten" us about her "truth" is done in a way that will serve to harm others whose "truth" is not the same has hers.

Poor Cynthia Nixon - the politically correct hounds have been unleashed, and they are on her trail. The gay rights activists and apologists in pursuit of her won't be satisfied in their mission until she recants her public statement or is chased into obscurity, never to be given a public platform again! They believe the sooner the ship can be righted, the better. Although I don't agree with Cynthia's lifestyle choice, I do commend her for speaking the truth and standing up under the intense ridicule and pressure she has come under. May God grant her the grace to understand that the best "choice" for her life is an eternal relationship with him.

Clearly-defined ideas, words, and truths are necessities for any people trying to accomplish some type of change or goal. The obfuscation of meaning has been the tool of choice for con-men, lawyers, and politicians for a long time and, if this trend is not reversed, it will ultimately lead our society to a confused, fractured, and painfully slow death. As Christians, these types of stories and debates should open a significant door for us to bring the liberating good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those struggling with these type of issues. Men and women CAN be changed through the power of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God and all of us are examples of that truth. I Corinthians 6:9-11 says:

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

For the church to continually accept the non-scientific claim that "people are born that way" is to sentence these people to a life of despair, depression, and hopelessness with no way or valid reason to get out. If the world continues to define the terms of the debate in these very important social matters, everyone will be confused and perplexed - and at that point, we can all just have a "gay" old time - whatever that means!

Stay Holy, My Friends!
